Silvermist Vineyards are certified organic by CERES( Certification of Environmental Standards GmbH) The natural fynbos is encouraged to grow amongst the vineyards alongside selected lupins and grains. This creates a unique rich biodiversity. Ducks and chickens provide the pest control and at the same time fertilize the vineyards. We practice a minimal intervention approach whereby we allow nature to correct itself. All composts are prepared on the farm from natural sources to promote self sufficiency. Silvermist does not use any pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers.
Silvermist has planted three cultivars, namely Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and a Cabernet Sauvignon. These three cultivars are planted on terrior where the maximum potential of each cultivar is achieved. The vineyards are all planted with permanent full surface cover crop and a zero soil tiling policy is followed maintaining soil structures to prevent erosion and promote beneficial micro organisms that naturally maintain soil fertility and balance. The soil’s virility is further maintained by preventing soil compaction by the use of a Traxcavator Tractor for Harvest and Vineyard maintenance.
Gregory Brink Louw received his degree in Oenology and Viticulture from the University of Stellenbosch and has been actively developing Silvermist Vineyards into a Wine Estate for more than 12 years from the initial clearing of the alien vegetation of the selected vineyard sites through to the planting, cultivating, winemaking and bottling. Many long hours have been spent creating his dream.
The wine maker, Gregory Brink Louw has two dogs, Rooster, a Cape Collie, as Gregory called him and Rocket Dog, a ‘X’ breed, both adopted rescue dogs - they spend many happy hours in the vineyard and are part of the production team.
